When in the world are you supposed to use ki in Haitian Creole? And how is “ki kote ki…” even correct? These are questions Haitian Creole learners ask all the time. So once again, how and when do you use “ki” in Haitian Creole?
Interestingly, one of the first things learners usually pick up is that ki is often used to ask questions. You’ve probably already memorized some words and phrases that use ki, like:
kiyès = who
ki sa = what
ki kote = where
ki lè = when
ki jan = how
poukisa = why
However, there’s a common mistake when using these words in Creole. Can you identify which of the following phrases is correct?
- Nou renmen ki sa n te wè. (We love what we saw.)
- Li te di l kote l te ye a. (She told him where it was.)
- Ki lè l te rive, m te kontan. (When it arrived, I was happy.)
- Jan l te fè l la te byen. (The way she did it was good.)
- Se poukisa yo fache. (That’s why they’re angry.)
If you answered that all of them are correct, you’re not alone—1, 3, and 5 are incorrect.
So, why do learners make these common mistakes?
One reason is that they’re often taught that the 5 W’s and 1 H words always translate the same way. While this is somewhat true when asking questions, it’s not always the case when making statements.
What can help you avoid this mistake?
